What is the difference between an Emergency Kit and Household Kit?

The Emergency Kit is designed for newly arrived refugees. These recipients often do not have a permanent shelter set up, and therefore require a more compact and portable filtration system. The Emergency Kit can hold up to eight litres of water at a time, making them the perfect solution for families needing urgent access to clean water. These are the kits that teams assemble during their Water Works event.

The Household Kit is designed for long-term use in established households. The kit is made with parts sources locally in Uganda, allowing us to support local businesses and reduce our carbon footprint. These kits hold 30 litres of water and are decorated with artworks created by teams during their Water Works event.

How does your completed kit reach people in need?

We distribute two types of water filtration systems as part of this program – one Emergency Kit and Household Kit.

Each filtration system is delivered by our charity partner Lifewater. They are an amazing team of people who ensure our filtration systems are delivered free of charge. Lifewater gathers enough filtration systems for a whole village in need before distributing them, to ensure fairness amongst the community, with each recipient family receives training locally on how to use their system.

Our filters are provided to households, schools and healthcare centres. The systems that are provided to schools and healthcare centres will normally provide enough drinking water for 200 people each day. The systems provided to households will typically provide enough clean water for ten or more family members for between two to five years.

The project is monitored by the local experienced Lifewater team on the ground to ensure systems are well maintained and support recipients with the longevity of their Water Works system.

Sustainability

In designing the Water Work program, we have been conscious of sustainability and the environment.  Wherever possible we re-use and recycle all surplus materials utilised within our workshops.

The filter is manufactured in the UK, yet we source everything else (where possible) from our hub in Uganda. This means that every dollar spent in providing these kits is also supporting local jobs within the communities.

During the distribution process we help the local community establish a committee which then oversees the use of all water systems and their maintenance. Having local people driving the process ensures a level of ownership and is a much more sustainable approach.

Where does my sponsored kit end up?

Every Emergency Kit and Household Kit that is donated has a unique tracking number, allowing teams to follow their donation up to when it is received by its end user. You can track your kits journey by entering your tracking number into 3BillionStories
